Japan’s publicly listed Bitcoin holder, Metaplanet, has been hitting fresh milestones while recently overtaking the Government of Bhutan in Bitcoin holdings. Furthermore, the company is also eyeing a place in the FTSE Japan index. That could possibly provide a greater boost to its daily trading volumes.
Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Holdings Climb to $1.7 Billion, Overtaking Govt. of Bhutan
Japan-based Metaplanet has officially surpassed the Kingdom of Bhutan in total Bitcoin holdings following its latest purchase. The publicly listed company acquired an additional $238.7 million worth of Bitcoin last week. That brought its total holdings to approximately $1.7 billion USD.
This latest accumulation puts Metaplanet $400 million ahead of Bhutan, whose national Bitcoin reserves currently stand at $1.3 billion, according to public data.

With its aggressive Bitcoin purchases this year in 2025, Metaplanet has grabbed a spot among the top-five publicly-listed Bitcoin holders worldwide. Recently, the company even surpassed giants like Tesla and Coinbase in BTC holdings.
Amid its aggressive Bitcoin purchases, the Metaplanet stock has surged 345% since the beginning of 2025. It soared more than 1500% since the company started building its Bitcoin Treasury in May 2024.
By recently overtaking the Government of Bhutan, the company has set a new benchmark among the global BTC holders.
Inclusion in the FTSE Japan Index
Japan’s Mizuho Securities has recently published a report highlighting the potential inclusion of the Metaplanet stock (3350) in Japan’s popular FTSE Index.
The Japanese company, which has pivoted to a Bitcoin treasury strategy, could be added to the FTSE Japan (Large/Mid) index following the upcoming regular review, according to a new forecast from Mizuho Securities.
FTSE Russell is scheduled to announce the results of its regular review of the FTSE All-World Index in the early morning of August 23 (JST). The changes will be implemented after the market closes on September 19.
Mizuho Securities’ Senior Quantitative Analyst Kanae Yamada forecasts that 12 stocks will be added to the FTSE Japan (Large/Mid) index, with Metaplanet leading the list of potential additions.

While focusing on Bitcoin accumulation, the company has completely transformed its Bitcoin strategy. With more than $5.4 billion in fundraising last month, the company also disclosed its plans to add 1% of the total BTC supply, i.e, 210,000 BTC, by the end of 2027.
The inclusion in the FTSE Japan Index would be a major milestone for the Japanese hotelier. Index inclusion typically brings increased institutional investment flows as passive funds tracking the index are required to purchase shares of newly added companies.
$3 Trillion Capital Group Adds Metaplanet Stocks
Capital Group, with more than $3 trillion in assets under management (AUM), has recently become the largest investor by purchasing Metaplanet shares. Commenting on the development, company CEO Simon Gerovich said:
Capital Group, which manages $2.9 trillion in assets, has ranked its latest investment as the 615th largest position across its global equity portfolio and the 27th largest among its Japanese equity holdings.
For its affiliate, Capital Research & Management Co., which oversees $1.1 trillion in assets under management, the position is even more significant. That marks its 17th-largest holding within the Japanese equities.
Following the footsteps of Metaplanet, Tokyo-listed Remixpoint Inc. has announced a successful capital raise of approximately 31.5 billion yen (around $215 million), with all proceeds earmarked for Bitcoin purchases.
The company stated that its initial target is to accumulate 3,000 BTC, though the final figure may be adjusted based on Bitcoin price fluctuations and Remixpoint’s stock performance. The move underscores the firm’s deepening commitment to digital assets as a strategic treasury asset.
