Hyperliquid Captured 35% of Blockchain Revenue in July Surge

Key Insights:

  • Hyperliquid earned 35% of all blockchain revenue in July.
  • Open interest surged to $15.3B, up 369% year-to-date.
  • HYPE price hit $49.75 in July before pulling back to $37.

Hyperliquid recorded the highest share of blockchain revenue in July, overtaking major networks including Solana, Ethereum, and BNB Chain, according to VanEck’s monthly crypto recap. The decentralized derivatives exchange generated 35 percent of all blockchain revenue last month. That milestone coincided with a sharp uptick in Hyperliquid’s open interest, volume, and user inflow.

The rise followed reliability issues on rival networks and sustained demand for perpetual futures trading. HYPE, the platform’s native token, traded near $37.50 after reaching an all-time high of $49.75 in mid-July. TradingView data showed a 3 percent pullback on Aug. 5 as broader market sentiment weakened.

VanEck analysts Matthew Sigel, Patrick Bush, and Nathan Frankovitz wrote that Hyperliquid “poached high-value users from Solana” and retained them through better execution and a simpler product. They noted Solana failed to meet expectations for core software upgrades, which gave Hyperliquid a competitive edge in the onchain perps market. Analysts also said Ethereum and BNB Chain lost market share in the process.

Hyperliquid Volume Outpaced Layer-1 Rivals

Our Network reported that Hyperliquid open interest hit $15.3 billion in July. That figure marked a 369 percent increase from January. The platform bridged in more than $5.1 billion in USD Coin during the same period, according to data shared on X. Phantom Wallet’s integration with in-app perps drove $2.66 billion in volume, adding 20,900 new users and generating $1.3 million in fees for the protocol.

The momentum began building earlier in the year as traders shifted to Hyperliquid for its speed and low latency. Crypto researcher @pana067 called Hyperliquid’s July revenue figure “the most insane crypto stat” seen this year. In a post on X, he highlighted that the network had “no VC or private funding” and reimbursed users for an API hiccup lasting just 30 minutes.

That transparency helped build trust during a month when other blockchains faced outages and congestion. Solana, in particular, lost steam after failing to deliver updates to its core validator client. Despite its early-year memecoin boom, SOL dropped 44 percent from its 2024 high, while HYPE gained over 300 percent since April.

HYPE Price Pulled Back After ATH

The HYPE token peaked at $49.75 on July 14, up from just over $10 in early April. The rally mirrored inflows to Hyperliquid’s platform and increased user activity. Daily volumes jumped alongside open interest, with derivative activity focused heavily on perpetual contracts. That trend tracked broader interest in onchain perps, outperforming spot markets in fees and user engagement.

On Aug. 5, HYPE traded at $37.38 after falling 3 percent. The chart showed a breakdown below the 0.236 Fibonacci level at $39.41, with bears targeting the $36.00 zone. RSI on the daily chart dropped to 38, suggesting weakening momentum. If bulls failed to reclaim $40.90 — the 0.382 level — sellers could push for deeper downside. The next key support sat around $34.00, a former breakout level from June.

The retracement followed a broader crypto market pullback. Bitcoin fell to $112,300 over the weekend before rebounding slightly. Traders reduced risk ahead of fresh U.S. inflation data and commentary from Federal Reserve officials on upcoming rate decisions. That macro shift pressured altcoins across the board.

Macro Risks and Token Volatility Remained

Despite its onchain dominance in July, Hyperliquid still faced market-driven risks. The protocol remained heavily tied to derivatives activity, which tends to unwind quickly during volatile conditions. CoinGlass data showed funding rates turned negative across several HYPE trading pairs, reflecting growing short interest.

HYPE failed to reclaim the $42.10 level and warned of further downside unless bulls recovered that zone. He pointed to the Fibonacci confluence between $43.30 and $45.00 as the area where the price needed to close above to restore upward bias.

Market sentiment also weakened after U.S. Treasury yields rose on better-than-expected labor market data. That prompted bets against further Federal Reserve rate cuts, which had supported risk asset rallies in July. Crypto traders pulled capital out of high-beta tokens, including those tied to perps protocols.

However, network-level fundamentals still favored Hyperliquid’s positioning. The platform’s share of onchain revenue remained above 30 percent as of early Aug., and its user retention rate continued to outpace competitors, according to Dune Analytics.

HYPE Outlook Hinges on $36–$40 Zone

Hyperliquid remained one of the most active protocols in the crypto market after July’s breakout. Its ability to retain users, drive volume, and generate fees during a period of altcoin weakness gave it momentum heading into August. However, the price of HYPE faced critical technical hurdles. The token needed to reclaim $40.90 and hold above $42.10 to flip structure back in favor of bulls.

If bears pushed below $36.00, momentum could unwind toward $32.00. Analyst Patrick Bush said Hyperliquid’s dominance may continue if Solana and Ethereum fail to address core reliability issues. That competitive edge, he noted, came from delivering what derivatives traders wanted — speed, uptime, and transparency. With macro headwinds returning, traders may rotate back into tokens that show structural strength, but the crypto market’s appetite for risk remains fragile.
