Is El Salvador Diversifying From Bitcoin With a $50M Gold Bet?

Latin American country El Salvador, the first to make Bitcoin a legal tender, is tilting towards the yellow metal Gold, announcing a $50 million purchase. The recent investment has stirred discussion in the crypto community, whether the Latin American country is choosing Gold over Bitcoin. Most market analysts see it as a diversification measure, instead of a pivot.

El Salvador’s Gold Investment Stirs Debate

The $50 million gold bullion purchase by El Salvador is the first in three decades, aligning with President Nayib Bukele’s goals of building a more stable economy. Amid the current crypto market volatility, the country’s Central Bank said this purchase is part of the asset diversification plan. The latest shift to Gold comes as the country moved its $680 million Bitcoin holdings to 14 wallets on Quantum threats.

El Salvador’s recent gold purchase underscores the government’s strategy to hedge against crypto and U.S. dollar volatility. Furthermore, per the country’s newly enacted Investment Banking Law (2025), gold has been formally recognized alongside Bitcoin as a qualifying asset for “sophisticated investor” status. Individuals should hold at least $250,000 in liquid assets to qualify for this status.

This move has some regulatory implications for crypto and digital asset service providers. These players need to mandatorily secure licenses such as the Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) license. Furthermore, as part of the new licensing framework, firms must incorporate gold asset verification and reporting into their regulatory obligations.

Adopting Gold doesn’t mean that the country is giving up on Bitcoin. The Latin American nation has continued to stack more Bitcoins, and currently holds 6,290 BTC in its kitty, worth $709 million, as per data from Bitcoin Treasuries.

Looking Beyond BTC Reserves

Apart from his push for Bitcoin adoption, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has also stressed on his long-standing push for hard assets as a safeguard against inflation and currency risk. Thus, adding the Gold mix to its reserves and Bitcoin, El Salvador is pursuing a dual approach that blends traditional and digital stores of value.

By adopting a mix of Gold and Bitcoin, the country is currently standing at crossroads of legacy and emerging financial systems. Analysts also suggest that this diversification could bolster El Salvador’s long-term economic resilience while once again drawing global attention to its unconventional monetary policies.

Amid its push for Bitcoin adoption, El Salvador has been facing the heat from global institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the past. However, the country still managed to secure a loan from the IMF in 2025. The trade-off was that it had to tone down its Bitcoin plans and revert its aggressive push of BTC adoption in the country.

Gold is Showing Strength Over Bitcoin

This year, yellow metal Gold has been in the limelight amid growing macro uncertainties. Since the beginning of 2025, the Gold price has surged 37%, while Bitcoin has gained only 22%. The yellow metal remains a preferred hedge asset amid economic uncertainties. However, a large part of the Gold rally has been driven by aggressive central bank purchases over the past year.

Earlier this week, Gold price climbed to a record high of $3,630 per ounce, while total holdings in gold-backed ETFs surged to an all-time peak of 2,905 tonnes by the end of August.

Amid growing macroeconomic uncertainty from Trump’s tariff policies and rising inflation, gold prices have climbed steadily to historic highs. Analysts note that if Bitcoin mirrors gold’s rally, BTC could reach $185,000 within the next 200 days, implying the potential for a 70% upside in the coming months.
