What is a cryptocurrency exchange?
A cryptocurrency exchange is a marketplace where you can buy, sell and trade digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and thousands of altcoins — for other cryptocurrencies or for government-issued (fiat) money like the US dollar. Exchanges match buyers with sellers, hold order books, set the prices you see quoted, and are where the vast majority of crypto trading volume happens.
Centralized (CEX) vs decentralized (DEX) exchanges
A centralized exchange (CEX) — such as Binance, Coinbase or Kraken — is operated by a company that custodies your funds, runs the matching engine and provides a familiar app-like experience. It is the easiest way to start, but you are trusting that operator with your assets and data.
A decentralized exchange (DEX) — such as Uniswap or PancakeSwap — lets you trade directly from your own wallet through smart contracts, with no company holding your coins. You keep custody and privacy, but take on more responsibility: wallet security, network fees and the risk of interacting with a flawed contract. The table above focuses on centralized spot exchanges, where reported volume and Trust Score are most comparable.
How exchanges are ranked here
Exchanges in the table are ordered using CoinGecko's Trust Score and 24-hour trading volume. Trust Score is an independent 0–10 rating that weighs reported versus estimated liquidity, order-book depth, web traffic, API coverage and other signals, to flag venues whose reported volume is credible. We surface this data — we do not assign our own "best exchange" rating or accept payment for placement. A high Trust Score indicates credible liquidity, not a guarantee of safety, regulatory standing or solvency.
How to choose a crypto exchange
- Security & track record: look for a long history without major unresolved hacks, proof-of-reserves, cold-storage practices and two-factor authentication.
- Regulation & region: confirm the exchange legally serves your country and complies with local rules — availability and features vary widely by jurisdiction.
- Fees: compare maker/taker trading fees, spreads, and deposit/withdrawal costs, which add up quickly for active traders.
- Liquidity: deeper markets mean tighter spreads and less slippage for the specific coins you want to trade.
- Supported assets & payments: check the coin is listed and that your preferred funding method (bank transfer, card, stablecoin) is supported.
- Custody: for larger balances, plan to withdraw to a self-custody wallet rather than leaving funds on the exchange.
Spot vs derivatives exchanges
Spot exchanges trade the actual asset for immediate settlement — you own the coin. Derivatives exchanges offer futures, perpetual swaps and options that track an asset's price, often with leverage. Derivatives can amplify both gains and losses and are far riskier; they suit experienced traders, not beginners.
Security & risks to understand
Even top-ranked exchanges carry real risk. Platforms have been hacked, become insolvent, or frozen withdrawals during stress. Regulatory action can restrict access overnight. "Not your keys, not your coins" is the industry's shorthand: assets held on an exchange are ultimately controlled by that exchange. Treat any funds you keep on a trading platform as capital you could lose, and move long-term holdings into self-custody.
How many cryptocurrency exchanges are there?
We currently track 500 exchanges via CoinGecko, of which 500 carry a Trust Score. Across the wider market there are several hundred more small, regional or newly launched venues. The vast majority of real trading volume, however, is concentrated in a few dozen large exchanges — which is why liquidity and Trust Score matter far more than the raw number of platforms.
How crypto exchange fees work
Most exchanges earn money through trading fees, typically split into a maker fee (adding liquidity with a limit order) and a taker fee (removing liquidity with a market order); these usually shrink as your 30-day volume grows. Beyond trading fees, watch three often-overlooked costs: the spread between buy and sell prices, deposit and withdrawal fees (especially on card purchases and fiat withdrawals), and on-chain network fees when moving crypto. For an active trader, the difference between a 0.1% and a 0.5% taker fee compounds quickly — always compare the all-in cost, not just the headline rate.
How to spot a risky or unsafe exchange
Warning signs worth taking seriously include: no clear information about the company, its location or leadership; promises of guaranteed returns or unrealistic bonuses; volume figures that look inflated relative to a low Trust Score; poor or fake reviews; withdrawal complaints; a lack of two-factor authentication or proof-of-reserves; and pressure to deposit quickly. A credible exchange is transparent about who runs it, where it is regulated, how it secures funds, and what happens if something goes wrong. When in doubt, start with a small test withdrawal before committing significant capital.
How crypto exchanges are regulated
Regulation varies enormously by jurisdiction and is still evolving. In the United States, exchanges navigate the SEC, CFTC and state-level money-transmitter licences; the EU is rolling out the unified MiCA framework; the UK requires FCA registration; and hubs like Singapore (MAS), Japan (FSA) and the UAE (VARA) run their own licensing regimes. Some countries restrict specific products (such as leveraged derivatives) or ban crypto trading outright. Because availability and legal protections differ so widely, always confirm an exchange is authorised to serve your country before you sign up.
Spot, margin and derivatives trading
Spot trading is the simplest: you buy or sell the actual asset and own it outright. Margin trading lets you borrow to increase position size, amplifying gains and losses. Derivatives — futures, perpetual swaps and options — are contracts that track an asset's price, usually with leverage. Margin and derivatives can multiply returns but also liquidate a position rapidly in volatile markets; they are tools for experienced traders, not beginners.
Key crypto exchange terms
- Liquidity: how easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving the price. Deep liquidity means tighter spreads and less slippage.
- Order book: the live list of buy and sell orders that determines the market price.
- Maker / taker: whether your order adds liquidity (maker) or removes it (taker) — each carries a different fee.
- Custody: who controls the private keys. On a centralized exchange, the exchange does; in self-custody, you do.
- KYC: "Know Your Customer" identity verification required by most regulated exchanges.
- Proof of reserves: published evidence that an exchange holds enough assets to cover customer balances.
Crypto exchanges FAQ
How many cryptocurrency exchanges are there?
We track 500 active cryptocurrency exchanges from CoinGecko, of which 500 carry a Trust Score. Hundreds more small or regional venues exist beyond this list.
What is the largest crypto exchange by trading volume?
CoinUp.io is currently the largest tracked crypto exchange by 24-hour spot trading volume, at approximately $6.79B. Rankings shift constantly with market activity.
What is a crypto exchange Trust Score?
Trust Score is CoinGecko's 0–10 rating of an exchange's reliability, combining reported vs estimated liquidity, order-book depth, web traffic and other signals. A higher score suggests more credible reported volume — it is not a safety guarantee.
What is the difference between a CEX and a DEX?
A centralized exchange (CEX) is run by a company that custodies your funds and matches orders — easy to use but you trust the operator. A decentralized exchange (DEX) lets you trade directly from your own wallet via smart contracts, keeping custody but requiring more technical care.
How do I choose a crypto exchange?
Weigh security and track record, trading fees, liquidity for the assets you want, whether it legally operates in your country, supported payment methods, and custody options. Never keep more on an exchange than you are willing to risk.
Are cryptocurrency exchanges safe?
No exchange is completely safe — they can be hacked, become insolvent, or restrict withdrawals. Reputable, well-regulated exchanges reduce but do not eliminate this risk. For larger holdings, self-custody in your own wallet is widely recommended.
What is the best crypto exchange?
There is no single "best" exchange — the right one depends on your country, the assets you want, your experience level and how much you value low fees versus features. Rather than a one-size-fits-all pick, compare exchanges on Trust Score, liquidity, security record, supported regions and cost using the table above.
Do crypto exchanges charge fees?
Yes. Almost all exchanges charge trading fees (a maker/taker percentage that usually falls with volume), and many add spreads plus deposit or withdrawal fees. Fee schedules vary widely and change often, so always check the current costs for the specific market and order type you plan to use.
Do I need to verify my identity to use a crypto exchange?
Most centralized exchanges require identity verification (KYC) to deposit fiat, trade at higher limits or withdraw, in line with anti-money-laundering rules. Decentralized exchanges generally do not, because you trade directly from your own wallet.
What is the difference between spot and derivatives trading?
Spot trading means buying or selling the actual asset for immediate settlement — you own the coin. Derivatives (futures, perpetual swaps, options) are contracts that track an asset's price, often with leverage that magnifies both gains and losses. Derivatives are far riskier and suit experienced traders.
