- The 61-year-old economist, Peter Schiff has presented the idea of creating USA Coin.
- According to Schiff, the USA coin is a substitute for the conception of Bitcoin reserves.
The well-known economist has proposed the idea of creating a government-backed coin named USA Coin.
Schiff has been a long-time Bitcoin critic. He suggests this new coin could be an alternative to establishing a Strategic Bitcoin reserve.
He opposes the idea of the US government investing in Bitcoin. Schiff argues that the government should opt for its cryptocurrency. This way, they can save a lot of money.
His proposal comes amid calls for a strategic Bitcoin reserve for the US. The strategic Bitcoin Reserve is being seen as a tool to fight inflation and strengthen the position of the Dollar as a global reserve.
Schiff’s Proposal: USA Coin
On December 21, 2024, Peter Schiff posted from his X handle. In his post, the 61-year-old economist opposed creating a Bitcoin reserve and discussed replacing it with a USA coin.
Peter argues that developing such a coin would be more cost-effective than the US investing in Bitcoin. This will save the taxpayers money and ensure the government controls the financial systems.
He stated, “Instead of creating a #Bitcoin strategic reserve, the U.S. could save a lot of money by creating #USAcoin.”
He presented a vision for a cryptocurrency that mirrors Bitcoin’s limited supply. Per his belief, the government could create a digital currency emulating Bitcoin’s capped supply of 21 million coins.
Peter Schiff mentioned, “Just like Bitcoin, the supply can be capped at 21 million, but with an upgraded blockchain to make USAcoin actually viable for use in payments. This way we can all get rich.”
The goal is to reduce the reliance on traditional fiat currencies and avoid the volatility of digital assets, such as Bitcoin. The coin would need an updated blockchain. This upgrade will enable the system to process payments.
Schiff’s Long History of Criticising Bitcoin, Bitcoin Reserve
Peter Schiff has a long history of opposing Bitcoin. Schiff has staunchly favoredtraditional assets like Gold. For years, he has argued that Bitcoin constantly lags in stability and tangibility. Since its early days, he often referred to it as a “bubble” and a “speculative asset” with no intrinsic value.
Now, his criticism has escalated to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. In a tweet dated December 9th, he suggested Biden should sell all the Bitcoins the US government holds before leaving office, to lower the 2024 budget deficit.
He added, “It would put an end to all the nonsense about creating a harmful “Strategic” Bitcoin Reserve.”
Peter Schiff’s idea of USA Coin is seen as one more way of trolling and opposing the Bitcoin reserve. Some of his posts beneath the announcement of his idea reflect the same.
In a lighter vein, Schiff shared a picture of the USA Coin in one of his posts, which he generated from Grok.

However, Peter Schiff’s criticism of the US Bitcoin reserve has not affected its popularity, yet. Polymarket projects a 33% chance that the US could see a strategic Bitcoin reserve in early 2025.
