Ethereum Price Faces $12B Long Liquidation Risk Before $5K Rally

Ethereum price bullish momentum stalled as liquidation risks and validator exits weighed on sentiment. Data showed that $12.3 billion in ETH longs would be liquidated if prices dropped to $3,900, creating the risk of a major flush before any rally higher.

On Sept. 19, trader Ted (@TedPillows) noted the large liquidation cluster. He wrote on X:

ETH traded at $4,476 at press time, down from last weekend’s brief breakout above $4,700.

$3,900 Becomes Critical Risk Zone

Charts from TradingView showed ETH consolidating between $4,200 support and $4,800 resistance. The 50-day moving average at $4,342 remained the key line to watch.

If Ethereum retested $3,900, billions in leveraged long positions could unwind. That risk remains despite relative strength index (RSI) readings around neutral levels.

Such a move could echo past liquidations where sudden downside wicks flushed late buyers before price reversed higher.

Validator Exit Queue Surges to Record

Ethereum staking dynamics added pressure. Data from ValidatorQueue.com showed 2.67 million ETH waiting to exit staking, with an estimated 46-day delay.

This represented more than $12 billion in locked tokens. While not all withdrawals imply sales, the imbalance between entry and exit queues unsettled investors.

Shrinking entry demand contrasted with heavy exit pressure, raising questions about confidence in staking yields. Elevated fees did boost validator rewards by 35% over the past week, but uncertainty persisted.

Corporate Treasuries Fuel Accumulation

Despite short-term headwinds, institutional accumulation painted a bullish long-term picture. Strategic ETH Reserve data showed companies added 877,800 ETH in the past 30 days, equal to about $4 billion.

Bitming Immersion Tech (BMNR), SharpLink Gaming (SBET), and The Ether Machine (ETHM) featured prominently. These firms staked part of their reserves or prepared to do so under formal mandates.

Corporate accumulation aligned with sustained inflows into spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs). CoinGlass reported net inflows of $213 million on Thursday alone, with total assets under management at $24.7 billion.

Tom Lee Adds to Multi-Billion ETH Holdings

Investor Tom Lee also made headlines. According to @crypto_goos and @rovercrc on X, Lee purchased 15,427 ETH ($69 million) this week, raising his total holdings to 2.17 million ETH worth $9.71 billion.

Large personal buys added weight to the case for long-term demand. Lee’s continued allocation highlighted institutional confidence in ETH as a corporate and investment reserve asset.

Q4 Historically Strong for Ethereum Price

Market commentators highlighted seasonal trends. @CryptosR_Us reminded followers that while Q3 is typically weak, Ethereum posted a +79% run this quarter.

With Q4 historically the strongest for crypto, the outlook remained positive. Bitcoin delivered median Q4 returns of 52% and Ethereum 22% in past cycles.

Combined with Federal Reserve rate cut expectations, ETF growth, and corporate stacking, the stage looked set for renewed strength. “History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes,” the post added.

Onchain Activity Backs Bullish Case

Ethereum network data reinforced resilience. Nansen reported transaction fees up 35% week-on-week, while active addresses grew 10%.

Higher fees supported validator yields and contributed to ETH’s burn mechanism, gradually reducing supply. Exchange balances also fell to five-year lows, with 2.69 million ETH withdrawn in two months.

This decline reduced readily available tokens for sale, a trend typically associated with accumulation phases.

Flush Before Ethereum Price Breakout

Ethereum faced conflicting signals as Q4 approached. A liquidation cluster at $3,900 threatened leveraged longs, while the validator exit queue raised concerns over staking stability.

At the same time, corporate treasuries, ETFs, and major investors accumulated billions in ETH. Robust onchain activity added to the bullish narrative.

The mix pointed to the possibility of short-term downside before any breakout above $5,000. Traders eyed $3,900 as the line that could trigger forced selling or clear the way for the next leg higher.
