U.S. Government Moves Over $74M BTC as Hyperliquid Whale Bets Big on Bitcoin

The U.S. government has recently transferred a substantial amount of its Bitcoin (BTC) holdings to a new address. This transfer coincides with recent moves from a Hyperliquid whale.

This large player, possibly an institution, currently controls $300 million in BTC exposure with just $30 million in collateral, amplifying both gains and risks.

U.S. Government Shifts 667.624 Bitcoin to New Address

Popular on-chain data analytics platform Arkham Intelligence brought the market’s attention to the BTC transfer by the U.S. government.

According to Arkham, the U.S. government moved 667.624 BTC to a new wallet address, bc1q5l4…zv9tmq.

At the current Bitcoin price, the transferred coins translated to $74.65 million, roughly $111,800 per BTC. These are coins seized from criminal activities.

Notably, the $74 million BTC transfer occurred earlier today, October 14, 2025. It suggested a deliberate action, likely by a U.S. agency such as the DOJ or the Marshals Service, which typically manages seized assets.

No further movement has been reported since then. This implies that the government may have transferred the coins for security, auction preparation, BTC strategy reserve, or observation.

Notably, the U.S. government periodically auctions seized BTC to recover funds for victims.

Given the $74.65 million value, this is likely a smaller batch.

Additionally, the transfer might be a reallocation to a designated reserve wallet, especially with Trump’s recent push for a Bitcoin strategic reserve. This closely aligns with a recent Chainalysis report.

Chainalysis revealed the U.S. government could seize Billions of dollars in illicit crypto on-chain for its digital asset reserves. The firm identified $75 billion in on-chain balances linked to illicit activities.

However, the transfer is more of a routine management move, given its modest size relative to the $22.11 billion stash.

Hyperliquid Whale Bets Big on Bitcoin

Amid the U.S. government transfers, a whale investor operating on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid has placed big bets on BTC.

Arkham Intelligence and on-chain analysts have linked this whale to a trader who profited approximately $200 million on Friday, October 10.

The trader shorted Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH) before the historic market crash that day.

Markets have also labelled the whale a “Trump Insider.” This is due to speculations that the trader might have had advance knowledge of President Trump’s 100% tariff on Chinese imports.

Their wallet address shows consistently large moves, including a recent $40 million USDC deposit to Hyperliquid.

Before the Friday crash, the whale shorted $700 million in BTC and $350 million worth of ETH. This leveraged bet against rising prices yielded the trader approximately $200 million in realized profits as prices declined.

Post the crash, the trader opened a new $127 million BTC short, bringing their total short position to $300 million.

Accordingly, the trader currently has unrealized profit and loss (PnL) of $5 million. This means their $300 million short is up $5 million based on the current BTC price.

Bitcoin Price Reaction

It is important to note that a $300 million short from a single player can influence the price movement of BTC, especially in a volatile market. If successful, it could trigger another round of market liquidations.

As of writing, BTC is priced $111,712, down 2.12% over the previous day. Investor activity also remained low, as indicated by the decreasing trading volume.

In the past 24 hours, trading volumes decreased by 14.6% to $81.37 billion.

Nevertheless, analysts are optimistic that BTC will soon experience a bullish rebound. Analysts believe BTC could head to $160,000 if institutional accumulation continues.

Market analyst Ted Pillows said Bitcoin has highlighted $113,000, $117,000, and $121,000 as short-term targets.
