Mt. Gox Postpones Creditor Payouts, Repayment Window Extended Again

This is the third time in a row that creditor repayments have been delayed, and the Mt. Gox rehabilitation process has been extended for another year.

On October 27, 2025, Rehabilitation Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said that the payback deadline has been rescheduled from October 31, 2025, to October 31, 2026.

The postponement comes as the trustee has mostly finished distributing funds to those who completed the required processes, but many creditors are yet unpaid.

Mt. Gox repayment progress faces procedural challenges

Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee confirmed that many creditors have not completed necessary procedures for receiving repayments.

The notice specified that these incomplete procedures is one of the primary obstacles preventing distribution completion. The trustee emphasized the goal of making repayments to such creditors “to the extent reasonably practicable.”

Mt. Gox announcement of extension

Beyond procedural incompleteness, the trustee identified various issues that arose during the repayment process itself.

The notice did not detail the specific nature of these issues but acknowledged their impact on the timeline.

The extension applies to nearly all repayment categories, with the trustee noting that “with the exception of certain types of repayments,” the deadline has been universally moved to October 2026.

Historical timeline of Mt. Gox repayment delays

Mt. Gox initially announced that repayments were expected to begin before October 31, 2023, after the claims filing deadline passed in April 2023.

The first extension came on September 21, 2023, when the repayment deadline moved from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2024. Officials stated at the time that certain creditors might receive payment before the end of 2023.

On July 5, 2024, Mt. Gox transmitted 47,228 BTC to begin repayments via approved exchanges. This includes Bitstamp, Kraken, Bitbank, SBI VC Trade, and BitGo.

Between July and August 2024, distributions reached approximately 19,500 to 21,000 creditors.

Data showed that out of the original 142,000 BTC pool, roughly 107,000 BTC were transferred to end recipients. Approximately 59,000 BTC were transferred to exchanges, while BitGo held 33,000 BTC.

The second extension occurred on October 10, 2024, moving the deadline from October 31, 2024, to October 31, 2025.

The trustee cited processing delays and many creditors not completing necessary procedures at that time. The October 27, 2025 announcement is the third delay.

Origins of the decade-long rehabilitation process

Mt. Gox collapsed in February 2014 after discovering massive losses of customer funds. The exchange filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo District Court and reported the loss of approximately 850,000 Bitcoin belonging to customers and the company.

Later investigations revealed systematic theft dating back to September 2011. According to U.S. Department of Justice indictments unsealed in 2023, attackers gained unauthorized access to servers holding cryptocurrency wallets and compromised primary signing keys.

The theft occurred gradually over a three-year period, ultimately resulting in the theft of approximately 647,000 BTC between September 2011 and May 2014.

Creditor communication and inquiry process

The rehabilitation trustee directed creditors to use the MTGOX Online Rehabilitation Claim Filing System for inquiries regarding the extension. The system remains accessible via the FAQ, where users can access an inquiry form by clicking the FAQ button.

The trustee acknowledged that response times may be delayed because of the large number of inquiries received.

The notice requested creditor understanding regarding potential delays in receiving responses to questions about the repayment process or deadline extension.

The continued delays are an ongoing frustration for rehabilitation creditors who have waited over a decade for repayments.

Many creditors originally expected to receive funds years ago when the rehabilitation plan was approved. The multiple extensions have pushed final distribution timelines repeatedly beyond initial projections.
