Key Highlights:
- ETF outflows hit 25,000 BTC in March amid institutional derisking
- $5B drawdown marks a 12% drop from Bitcoin ETF peak holdings
- Technical charts hint at possible bullish momentum returning
In 2024, inflows into Bitcoin ETFs were steady. Over the year, cumulative net inflows exceeded $30 Billion and were positive every week.
In the peak, some weeks reported inflows of more than 100,000 BTC. This strong demand fueled BTC price rally to new highs by the end of 2024.
However, since early 2025, the pattern has changed. Now, weekly charts show growing red bars representing negative net flows.
In mid-March 2025, outflows were approaching 25,000 BTC, the most weekly drop this year. These withdrawals imply that institutions are leaving or scaling down their positions.

Additionally, Bitcoin ETFs holdings have been directly affected by the reversal. Total cumulative holdings were increasing in 2024.
However, net cumulative inflows in 2025 have stalled. The CryptoQuant data showed a slight decrease in Bitcoin ETFs total holdings from around 470,000 BTC to about 455,000 BTC.

At the same time, technical indicators are also beginning to indicate a potential shift in momentum. The Titan of Crypto’s chart suggests that weekly momentum indicators are bullish.
This development hints at growing optimism in the market. Both times, the signals were present in previous cycles, and prices rallied 174% and 102%, respectively.

The stochastic oscillator has a crossover, the MACD histogram has rising momentum bars, and the RSI has support. These indicators have previously been a strong indicator of strong upward moves.
$5 Billion Drawdown from ETF Highs
Another key data point is the decline from all-time highs. CryptoQuant estimated that the entire withdrawal from Bitcoin ETFs in March 2025 was about $5 Billion.
This is a loss of about 12% from peak levels. The drawdown is the amount of capital pulled out of ETFs versus the high.

The drop has also coincided with a drop in BTC price. It has fallen to around $87,000 after hitting highs above $110,000. This downturn has contributed to outflows from Bitcoin ETFs, as institutional investors strongly influence market direction.
As of now, the ETF realized price, a metric that represents the average entry price for ETF buyers, is at $72,546. Bitcoin price was $87,000 at press time, so ETF holders were still up by 17% on average. In other words, some are taking profits, but most are still in profit zones.

Although there have been recent outflows, there are some indications of a more balanced market. The daily ETF netflow data shows smaller moves, neither big inflows nor big exits.
This downturn has led to outflows from Bitcoin ETFs. Institutional investors, known for their strong influence, have played a significant role in shaping market direction.
Institutional Rebalancing
This trend is part of institutional rebalancing. Firms are derisking as concerns around inflation, interest rates, and global markets push them to do so. It’s common in uncertain times when people adjust their portfolios to reduce exposure to risky assets like Bitcoin.
A CryptoQuant report noted, “Institutions are reshuffling and derisking because of macro uncertainty.” The timing of this shift is in line with recent ETF outflows and the price pullback.
However, it seems that Bitcoin ETFs are at a standstill for now. There is no strong selling momentum at present. However, the buying pressure has also faded. The market is in a waiting phase, and ETF activity will be one of the key drivers in the coming weeks.
