Crypto Market Holds Breath Ahead Of Jackson Hole As PMI Hints At Heat

Key Insights:

  • The crypto market reflected caution pre-Jackson Hole, and bonds and USD gained.
  • S&P Manufacturing, Services PMIs gained, reflecting impending inflationary pressure.
  • Unemployment, initial jobless claims, and existing house sales data paint a mixed picture.

The crypto market anticipates hints and signals for rate cuts at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy symposium this Friday. Observers are pensive but not expecting surprises. Several US economic data releases are slated for release on August 21st, 2025.

Bitcoin and Crypto altcoins didn’t show exaggerated movements running up to the Economic Policy Symposium on Friday. At press time, BTC was trading at $112,283, down 1.69% intraday. Also, Ethereum (ETH) was priced at $4,229, down 2.6% intraday.

Crypto Market Braces for Powell Punch

On the eve of the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, the crypto market showed sharp liquidations. Thursday, BlackRock sold BTC and ETH worth $214 million and $254 million, respectively. The market is cautious, running up to the Jackson Hole event.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s statements at Jackson Hole will be scrutinized for hints regarding Fed rate decisions. The symposium is designed to foster discussion between participants. This includes central bankers, finance industry leaders, academics, and government officials.

Powell has a history of being cautious when making policy statements. Therefore, no one is expecting a big surprise yet.

However, given that Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policy is expected to spike inflation further, observers expect rate cuts. Trump recently suggested on Truth Social that he would give further military support to Ukraine.

The one-year and two-year treasury bond yields reflected a 0.053% and 0.048% uptick on August 21st. This suggests a cautionary stance among investors. The Dollar index (DXY) gained around 0.4% intraday.

Strong PMI Data Fuels Rate Hike Speculation, Pressures Crypto Market Dynamics

The S&P Global Manufacturing PMI rose to 53.3 in August, up from 49.8 in July, signaling expansion. The Composite PMI also increased to 55.4, slightly above July’s 55.1, indicating continued economic strength.

Chris Williamson’s Comment of hiring Surge | Source: S&P Global

In S&P’s release, Chris Williamson, Chief Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that “…While this upturn in demand has fueled a surge in hiring, it has also bolstered firms’ pricing power. Companies have consequently passed tariff-related cost increases through to customers in increasing numbers, indicating that inflation pressures are now at their highest for three years.”

Williamson believes the rise in PMI indices increases the likelihood of a rate hike. Historically, the FOMC tends to tighten policy when economic indicators show strength. This makes a rate cut less probable in the near term.

BTC was hovering near the $112,000 support while Crypto altcoin ETH was close to the $4000 support at the time of writing.

The overall crypto market saw a 2.03% (intraday) drop in market cap to $3.81 trillion. A rate cut in September would boost liquidity. This would encourage a move towards the riskier crypto market.

Unemployment Claims Rise Amid Positive House Sales Data

The Department of Labor reported an uptick in the initial claims for the week ending August 16th. At 235,000, there were 11,000 more claims than the previous week’s unrevised figure of 224,000.

According to the Labor Department, initial claims are made by employees who are separated from their employers. Insured unemployment rose to 1,972,000 for the week ending August 9th, 2025. This marks the highest level recorded since November 6th, 2021.

This figure represents individuals who continue to receive unemployment benefits beyond their initial claim. It reflects those who have been jobless for more than one week. It was an increase of 30,000 over the previous week’s revised data.

The theme at this year’s Jackson Hole Economic Symposium is ‘Labor Markets in Transition: Demographics, Productivity and Macroeconomic Policy’. Unemployment is a key indicator the Federal Reserve uses to make decisions, especially regarding rate cuts.

Rising unemployment signals a contracting economy, naturally leading to rate cuts. The latest Fed minutes suggest that the Fed believes rate cuts are unnecessary for now.

Sales of pre-owned homes in the US rose by 2% in June. The data comes from the National Association of Realtors (NAR). CNBC reported that NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said the positive change was due to wage growth outpacing home price growth.
