The latest data of the altcoin season index indicates that the market is due for a shift in sentiment. With analysts pointing at historical patterns and solid technical setups, a new altcoin season could be on its way. Market indicators suggest that the shift in dominance from Bitcoin to altcoins may gain momentum soon.
Altcoin Season Index Indicates Possible Market Rebound
According to CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index, this reading is 27 out of 100, indicating a Bitcoin-dominant phase. However, the metric has recovered from last week’s 23, signalling the increasing strength of altcoins following recent consolidation.

The chart also indicates that the Market Cap of altcoins is hovering around $1.6 trillion, implying a reflexive inflow of liquidity amid dull sentiment. The highest index was recorded at 87 in December 2024, representing the best altcoin cycle of the last year before the capital rotation shifted to Bitcoin.
The analysts see the upward trend as a clear indication of rotation. When the altcoin season index rises above 50 once again, it may signal the beginning of a new era in which the majority of leading altcoins outperform Bitcoin. This measure is still considered one of the most closely tracked signs of investor interest in the broader cryptocurrency market.
Cup and Handle Targets $4.37 Trillion
A long-term technical structure favors the bullish view. Trader Tardigrade highlighted a Cup and Handle formation on the Total 3 index, which tracks the total market capitalisation of all altcoins except Bitcoin and Ethereum.

His chart pointed to a possible breakout with a target of $4.37 trillion, which would be more than 3x market expansion from current levels under $1.2 trillion. This structure is similar to those observed during the 2021 cycle, which led to massive price surges in top Layer-1 and DeFi tokens.
According to his analysis, the formation of the handle implies what is called accumulation, where traders consolidate their positions before a new rally. Such a gradual increase across the neckline would mark the onset of an altcoin season, which is driven by liquidity inflows and heightened risk tolerance.
Bitcoin Dominance Break Sparks Rotation
Crypto Phoenix added to the argument that altcoin season may start as Bitcoin’s dominance weakens. His chart shows Bitcoin’s dominance line breaking a two-year uptrend, a technical event that typically signals a shift in capital toward alternative assets.

He predicts that the next two to three months will see some significant advances across key sectors, notably in AI, DeFi, and privacy coins. Historically, these rotations occur following the consolidation of Bitcoin as traders look for higher returns elsewhere.
The dominance ratio falling below 58% may further prove this thesis. Once confirmed, analysts expect the altcoin season index to rise significantly, indicating improved performance of non-Bitcoin assets in the top 100 list.
Historical Patterns Indicate Bullish Setup
Veteran analyst Michael van de Poppe noted similarities between the current market and late 2019. His chart of the altcoin market cap relative to Bitcoin has consolidation at multi-year support, forming a structure identical to the early bull market bases.

He believes the current conditions are part of a slow transition to the next expansion phase. Increased trading volume, deeper liquidity, and past parallels suggest that this could be the beginning of a long altcoin season.
At the same time, social data and volume of exchange align with previous market cycles where altcoins started to outperform Bitcoin. If history is repeating itself, the current altcoin season’s index reading could represent a significant accumulation opportunity.
