  • The cryptocurrency industry has already gained significant acceptance in the US, thanks to nearly $250 million in crypto donations during the 2024 election.

The United Kingdom (UK) is considering banning crypto donations to political campaigns, according to a new report from Politico. This could impact Reform UK, which became the first UK party to accept crypto donations earlier this year.

The upstart party, led by Nigel Farage, had embraced cryptocurrency as one of its key talking points.

UK Proposed Electoral Bill Working Could Include Provisions on Crypto Donations

According to Politico, citing people familiar with the matter, lawmakers in the UK are discussing a ban on political donations made with cryptocurrency. Although there has been no official disclosure yet, reports suggest that the proposed Election Bill may include provisions on this matter.

The proposed legislation promises to introduce multiple reforms to the UK’s election process. These include strengthening the UK Electoral Commission, reducing the voting age limit to 16, and banning donations from unincorporated associations and shell companies.

Interestingly, the initial policy paper on the Election Bill does not mention a ban on crypto donations. However, calls for it have been growing strong, especially from Labour Party members. Former Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden and Business Select Committee Chair Liam Byrne have both called for the ban.

Byrne, who is also a member of the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, emphasised that the Election Bill must include strong safeguards for digital assets before it can be considered.

Most of those calling for the ban cite concerns about the transparency of digital assets. According to them, allowing crypto donations could let the proceeds of crimes and foreign donations flow into political campaigns.

Ban on Crypto Political Donations Could Impact Reform UK

Meanwhile, any proposed ban on crypto donations will directly affect Reform UK. The party is the only one in the UK that accepts crypto donations, and earlier this year, it claimed to have enhanced controls in place.

With crypto adoption in the UK being one of its major talking points, Reform looks likely to attract the support of crypto donors in the coming elections. A ban on crypto donations would effectively limit its ability to secure funding from the industry.

Nevertheless, the party is also under scrutiny after the former head of Reform in Wales, Nathan Gill, was convicted of bribery.

Gill got more than ten years in prison after admitting to taking bribes to make pro-Russian statements. Although Farage has already distanced himself from him, critics have called for further investigations.

Interestingly, the UK’s clampdown on crypto donations for political campaigns would mark a sharp difference compared to the US. The cryptocurrency industry played a significant role in shaping the outcome of the US 2024 elections, with over $245 million in donations.

Both major political parties also accepted crypto donations for the election. However, President Donald Trump was a bigger beneficiary with his pro-crypto rhetoric winning over multiple industry stakeholders and contributing to his victory.
