Altcoins drew fresh attention as traders looked for rotation beyond Bitcoin. Current dashboard data showed improving breadth, but not a fully confirmed handoff, with CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index at 64/100 and Bitcoin dominance still at 58.6%.
That backdrop supports the idea that capital is spreading beyond Bitcoin, though the move remains incomplete. The key question is whether altcoins can sustain relative strength if Bitcoin dominance stays near current levels.
Altcoins Hold Interest as Bitcoin Dominance Stays Elevated
Crypto market capitalization, excluding Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, has rebounded from a long-term ascending support line. The same broad structure supported earlier market bottoms in 2019 and 2022.
The market previously expanded by about 1,996% during the 2021-2022 cycle, rising sharply from its multi-year base before reaching the cycle peak. Meanwhile, the 2024-2025 cycle recorded a smaller 380% increase.

Ash Crypto said altcoins are bouncing from important multi-year support. He identified a drop in Bitcoin dominance below 58% as one condition that could allow altcoins to extend their gains. Such a move would mean Bitcoin controls a smaller share of total cryptocurrency market capitalization.
Total crypto market capitalization excluding Bitcoin also sits above a rising support structure stretching back several years. The market has held this trend through the latest consolidation after expanding sharply during previous altcoin cycles.
Altcoin Dominance Challenges a Five-Year Barrier
Altcoin dominance against Bitcoin has reached a descending trendline that has capped the ratio since 2021. The ratio formed lower peaks during 2021, 2024, and subsequent rebounds before returning to the same resistance area in 2026.
Recent movement has pushed the ratio through that long-running barrier. Cryptollica described the move as a five-year breakout. Sustaining that advance would break the sequence of declining relative highs that has controlled altcoin performance against Bitcoin since the 2021 cycle.

The ratio tracks cryptocurrencies outside the largest assets against BTC, making it useful for measuring relative capital movement. A rising ratio means those altcoins are gaining market value faster than Bitcoin.
Javon Marks also pointed to an accumulation structure against Bitcoin, with altcoins moving above established resistance areas. Continued strength would require the market to protect those breakout levels.
Leverage Moves Toward Smaller Cryptocurrencies
Derivatives positioning has also shifted toward altcoins. The share of open interest linked to cryptocurrencies outside Bitcoin and Ethereum has climbed to its highest level in roughly two and a half years, according to data shared by Ted Pillows.
Bitcoin previously controlled a larger share of derivatives open interest, but its portion has declined as traders increased positions across other cryptocurrencies. The “Others” category has moved toward 40% of total open-interest dominance, bringing it close to Bitcoin’s share.

Higher altcoin leverage reflects increased speculative activity but also changes the market’s risk profile. Large leveraged positions accelerate gains during rising markets and produce faster liquidations when prices move in the opposite direction.
Altcoins already show stronger conditions across market capitalization, relative dominance, and derivatives positioning. Their long-term support continues to hold, while relative performance against Bitcoin has moved through a multi-year resistance area.
