Key Insights:
- Bitcoin broke below $76,500, triggering a death cross and confirming short-term bearish momentum.
- Derivatives volume spiked 176%, but open interest dropped, suggesting cautious trader positioning.
- Whale wallets rose by 4.6%, showing long-term accumulation despite near-term price weakness.
Bitcoin (BTC) extended its losses on April 7, plunging below the widely watched $76,500 support level. The move confirmed bearish technical signals already flashing across the daily chart.
At the time of writing, BTC changed hands near $75,195, down 9.59% in the last 24 hours. The decline added pressure to an already weakening structure, pushing Bitcoin closer to the lower trendline of a descending channel that has been in play since mid-March.
Death Cross Hits Daily Chart
On April 7, crypto analyst Ali Martinez noted that Bitcoin had just triggered a “death cross,” a chart event where the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) falls below the 200-day SMA. Historically, this pattern precedes deeper corrections or sustained downtrends in the cryptocurrency market.

The signal reflects growing selling pressure amid declining market confidence. On the same day, Bitcoin also slipped below the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA), reinforcing the bearish trend.
Arthur Hayes Reacts to $76.5K Break
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes reacted to the drop with characteristic flair. Writing on X, he suggested that a break below $76,500 could damage his credibility.

His comment reflected the broader mood in the market, where bulls had used the $76,500 level as a psychological and technical support. That floor has now given way, leaving BTC exposed to further downside, possibly toward $74,000 or lower.
Hayes later added, “BUY THE FING DIP,” though market data shows many traders remain cautious.
Whales Accumulate Despite Price Weakness
Despite the bearish technical signals, on-chain data shows continued accumulation by large entities.
According to Ali Martinez, 76 new whale wallets holding more than 1,000 BTC joined the network in the last two months. The 4.6% increase in such addresses suggests institutional interest remains high, even as short-term price action turns negative.

Historically, whale accumulation often aligns with medium- to long-term bullish trends. However, that signal can lag price action, especially during corrective phases.
Price Squeezed by Technical Resistance
BTC price now faces stiff resistance between the $85,000 and $86,000 region. This range coincides with the 0.5 and 0.618 Fibonacci retracement levels from the Nov. 2024 low to the all-time high.

Both the 50-day and 200-day EMAs are also converging around the $86,000 area. Unless Bitcoin breaks above this resistance, upward momentum will likely remain capped.
On the downside, immediate support lies near $74,800. A close below this level could trigger a deeper pullback toward the $70,000 zone.
The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) currently hovers around 32, just above oversold territory. A drop below 30 would indicate extreme selling conditions but could also trigger a short-term bounce.
Traders Brace for Further Volatility
Volatility returned after weeks of range-bound trading. The death cross has now confirmed a shift in trend, while macro pressure adds to the bearish tone.

Data from BTC derivatives markets reflect growing trader activity. Total trading volume surged by 176.68% to $177.29 billion, signaling renewed speculation. Despite this, open interest declined by 3.84% to $51.40 billion, hinting at a reduction in outstanding bullish bets.
The drop in open interest, coupled with spiking volume, suggests that traders are rotating positions rather than entering new long-term commitments. Meanwhile, funding rates remain neutral, offering no clear bias between longs and shorts.
Social sentiment also shows division. Arthur Hayes urged followers to “buy the dip,” but many market participants appear hesitant. Some await confirmation of a bottom before reentering.
At present, Bitcoin must reclaim the $80,000 zone with strong volume to neutralize the bearish structure. Key support now lies at $74,800. If breached, the next target could fall closer to $70,000.
Bitcoin’s drop below $76,500 and the emergence of a death cross have turned attention back to downside risks. Although whale accumulation continues, short-term momentum favors bears. With sentiment fragile and technical pressure building, the coming days could set the tone for Bitcoin’s trajectory heading into mid-April.
