- Thailand to exempt crypto capital gains tax from 2025 to 2029.
- Tourists may soon spend crypto via card-linked platforms.

Thailand’s Cabinet approved new tax measures to exempt personal income tax on crypto capital gains. The exemption applies only to gains from transactions conducted on platforms licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The policy will take effect from Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2029.
The Ministry of Finance submitted the proposal to encourage both domestic and foreign crypto investment. Chulaphan Amornvivat, a Cabinet member and Pheu Thai Party representative, confirmed the move in a statement posted on X.

Officials said the initiative aligned with the country’s broader digital asset strategy. It aimed to boost innovation while generating over 1 billion baht in tax revenue through indirect channels such as value-added tax (VAT).
Tax Policy Targets Transparency and Global Standards
The exemption applied only to capital gains from digital asset trading on regulated platforms. The decision mirrored global efforts to formalize crypto taxation while promoting compliance through oversight by the SEC.
Thai tax authorities also began preparing for the implementation of the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS). This framework supports the automated exchange of financial data across borders, improving auditability and compliance.
Officials stated that adoption of CRS for crypto would enhance Thailand’s credibility and legal clarity. By applying a structured framework, the government hoped to stimulate technological development and attract global investors seeking regulatory certainty.
The exemption marked Thailand as one of the few countries with enforceable crypto tax guidelines. Policymakers positioned it as a tool to unlock long-term digital growth and expand the financial sector.
Crypto Spending Integration Planned for Tourism Sector
As part of ongoing reforms, Thai officials are also working on a parallel initiative aimed at allowing tourists to spend cryptocurrency during their stay. The concept involves linking tourists’ crypto wallets to credit card platforms that automatically convert digital assets into Thai baht at the point of sale. Merchants will receive fiat currency without directly handling crypto, reducing volatility exposure and regulatory concerns.
The plan was unveiled by the deputy prime minister and finance minister Pichai Chunhavajira at an investment seminar in Bangkok on May 26. Pichai said the Ministry of Finance and the bank of Thailand are in the midst of checking the infrastructure and other legal frameworks to be put in place before piloting the project. The true reason why officials refer to it as a non-direct solution to the national currency, however, is seen in the essence that it provides an alternative way of crypto spending.
This initiative is part of a broader push to modernize Thailand’s financial system and enhance its appeal to tech-savvy international travelers. If implemented successfully, the system could diversify tourist spending options and support the government’s larger digital transformation agenda. Per Report, KuCoin also ventured into Thailand using licensed crypto-exchange.
KuCoin Enters Thailand
In the meantime, international digital exchange KuCoin officially entered the Thai market after purchasing ERX Company as a licensed digital token operator. Having obtained the necessary regulatory permission, the exchange was renamed as KuCoin Thailand and was launched under the new brand name on April 22, 2025.

The acquisition makes the KuCoin firm set to operate within digital asset regulation in Thailand and provide services to the budding numbers of domestic crypto users. As of April 30, 2025, the platform has been officially registered under Thailand Ministry of Commerce.
All the current users of ERX were transferred to the KuCoin infrastructure and they can continue using the services of the new brand with ease.
