Key Insights:

  • MicroStrategy’s MSTR stock breaks into a rally as Bitcoin stalls around $119,000 levels.
  • Dilution risk grows amid a continued MicroStrategy Bitcoin accumulation strategy.
  • Analyst flags equity-heavy funding concerns for MicroStrategy’s BTC plan.

MicroStrategy’s MSTR stock fell sharply on Tuesday, ending a six-day winning streak with a 1.93% decline to close at $442.31. This marked the first red day after a five-session run that saw the stock rise nearly 14%, culminating in an eight-month high.

The reversal comes amid a broader cooldown in Bitcoin (BTC) price action, with BTC consolidating around the $118,000 mark despite a 2.04% gain on the day.

MicroStrategy’s MSTR stock continues to display significant sensitivity to Bitcoin’s movements due to its aggressive treasury policy. Since 2020, the company has prioritized Bitcoin as its primary reserve asset.

This is a decision that has heavily aligned the company’s stock performance with that of the cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin Consolidates Near $119K Amid Diminishing Volume

Bitcoin prices rose 2.04% to $119,178.33 at the time of MicroStrategy’s close, recovering from an earlier dip that briefly threatened support near $116,700.

However, despite the price uptick, 24-hour trading volume dropped 44.89% to $81.26 billion, signaling weakening momentum. The chart shows Bitcoin bouncing off intraday lows and entering a mild uptrend heading into U.S. market hours. However, the lack of volume confirmation could cap further upside in the near term.

This flattening in Bitcoin momentum appears to have weighed on sentiment toward MicroStrategy’s equity, which often trades as a Bitcoin proxy stock. Short-term price action on the MSTR daily chart highlights a failed attempt to hold above the $450 level, previously acting as a key resistance zone.

MSTR Stock Retracing From a New High

The stock touched a high near $455 early in the session before reversing sharply to an intraday low around $440. A modest recovery followed, but it closed well below Monday’s level of $451.02.

On the weekly timeframe, MSTR stock remains in an uptrend and is currently trading $26 above its last suggested buy zone at $430.35. According to the latest technical chart analysis, the next major upside target stands at the $543 region, provided MSTR reclaims and holds above $450 with strong volume.

However, the pullback in Tuesday’s session introduces short-term bearish risk unless the stock can maintain support around the $430–$440 band.

Tuesday’s downside pressure also coincided with bearish commentary from Monness Crespi Hardt analyst Gus Gala. The expert reiterated his “sell” rating on MSTR stock. Gala, the only bearish voice among 17 analysts tracked by FactSet, set a price target of $200.

This implies over 55% downside from current levels. His primary concern is not MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin exposure, but the mechanics of how the company continues to accumulate its holdings.

MicroStrategy is operating under a capital plan that permits up to $42 billion in common stock issuance. It also has another $42 billion in preferred stock and convertible debt.

Dilution Risks Loom Over MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin Play

MicroStrategy’s capital plan allows the issuance of up to $42 billion in both common and preferred stock.

Last week, the company raised $472.3 million, with $330.9 million (around 70%) coming from common stock sales raising dilution concerns.

As of May 2, MicroStrategy reported 273.4 million shares outstanding, up from 257.4 million on Feb. 4. Adjusted for the 10-for-1 stock split in Aug. 2024, this figure has nearly tripled since July 2020, when the Bitcoin accumulation strategy began.

Despite this, MicroStrategy continued accumulating BTC. On Monday, it added 4,225 BTC, marking its 16th addition in 18 weeks.

The company now holds 601,550 BTC at a total cost of $42.87 billion. At current prices, that stash is worth approximately $70.44 billion, leaving it with substantial unrealized gains.

Still, Gala warned that even preferred stock, while less dilutive, poses long-term risks.

Servicing dividend payments on preferred shares could force MicroStrategy into additional capital raises or even BTC sales—undermining the strategy it seeks to defend.
