Spot Bitcoin ETFs bled $812M on Aug. 1, with Fidelity and ARK leading exits. The move marks the second-largest single-day outflow since launch, while Ethereum ETFs snapped a 20-day inflow streak with $152M withdrawn.
Bitcoin ETFs Record Second-Highest Daily Outflow on Aug. 1
According to data compiled from multiple issuers, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds lost over $812 million on Aug. 1, marking the second-largest daily outflow since launch. The drawdown came amid rising market pressure and likely strategy unwinding by institutional players.

Fidelity’s spot Bitcoin ETF, FBTC, accounted for the biggest outflow, losing $331.4 million. ARK’s ARKB followed with a $327.9 million withdrawal. Bitwise’s BITB and Grayscale’s GBTC shed $38.3 million and $66.8 million respectively, according to flow data reviewed on Aug. 2.
Only a few issuers avoided losses. BlackRock’s IBIT reported a minor $2.6 million outflow, breaking a streak of steady inflows. No spot Bitcoin ETF recorded a material inflow that day.
Feb. 2025 Remains Bitcoin ETFs’ Worst Day on Record
Despite the Aug. 1 exodus, it still fell short of the record set earlier this year. On Feb. 26, 2025, investors pulled over $1 billion in a single session, the largest on record.
That event was widely attributed to hedge funds unwinding a basis trade shorting futures while going long spot ETFs. The strategy breaks down when funding costs or volatility distort arbitrage spreads.
Wu Blockchain, posting on X on Aug. 2, attributed the outflows to hedge funds unwinding a trading strategy that exploits price spreads between spot and futures markets. The post also suggested that newer crypto investors may have panicked and sold, contributing to the exit.
The Aug. 1 flows suggest similar forces may be at play again.
Ethereum ETF Inflows Break After 20-Day Run
Ethereum ETFs also faced pressure. Wu Blockchain noted a total net outflow of $152 million from Ethereum-based ETFs on the same day.
This ended a rare 20-day streak of consecutive net inflows, highlighting a broader cooldown in crypto ETF sentiment. Until then, Ether ETFs had held up better than their Bitcoin counterparts in recent weeks.
The reversal follows a stretch of strong inflows into Ether-based products as traders positioned ahead of Ethereum’s next protocol updates and ETF developments.
BlackRock Still Dominates Market Share Despite Outflows
As of Aug. 1, cumulative net inflows across all spot Bitcoin ETFs totaled $54.18 billion, with total assets under management at $146.48 billion, according to Bitcoin Archive and publicly available issuer data.

BlackRock’s IBIT remains the largest ETF by trading volume and inflow share. It has attracted over $57.5 billion in net flows since launch, with roughly 1 million investors, 75% of whom are new clients.
IBIT also represents 70% of all spot Bitcoin ETF trading, per Bitcoin Archive’s Aug. 1 post.
That dominance remained despite Thursday’s modest outflow, which may reflect temporary rebalancing rather than broad sentiment change.
Cumulative Trend Still Bullish, But Volatility Returns
ETF total value traded stood at $6.14 billion on Aug. 1, suggesting strong activity even as flows turned negative. Analysts remain divided on whether this reversal marks a trend shift or temporary pressure from hedging activity.
The latest moves also highlight how quickly market flows can reverse amid macro or liquidity shocks. Though the crypto market has absorbed ETF-driven demand for months, the Aug. 1 exit reminds investors that sentiment can flip quickly.
The week ahead will test whether outflows continue or if buyers return. ETF flows remain a key indicator for institutional sentiment and potential market resilience.
