Crypto Seed Phrase Exploits, Front-End Hacks Cause $2.1B Theft

Key Highlights:

  • Over 80% of $2.1B crypto stolen via infrastructure exploits.
  • Seed-phrase hijacking and front-end hacks dominate stolen assets.
  • The TRM Labs report urges multifactor security and global collaboration.

Crypto seed phrase weaknesses played a major role in recent hacks. According to TRM Labs, users and platforms lost a record $2.1 Billion to cyberattacks in early 2025. This marks the highest loss ever reported in six months.

The report indicates that over two-thirds of these losses occurred because of two primary threats. These crypto seed phrase theft and front-end infrastructure hacks proved more effective and harmful than ever.

TRM Labs shared its findings on X on June 27. The report highlights a major shift in how crypto-related crimes are evolving.

Although breaches in smart contracts and bridge protocols have traditionally caused major losses. Techniques to target consumers directly or take control of their digital infrastructure have been prevalent in 2025 thus far.

Crypto Seed Phrase Theft Is Rising Fast

TRM Labs reports that threat actors have intensified phishing and malware attacks. These campaigns now specifically target crypto seed phrases, unique 12- or 24-word keys that unlock digital wallets.

When secured, these phrases provide complete access to a user’s digital assets, and the theft is not reversible. Simultaneously, hackers hijack front-end wallets and dapps. It allows them to redirect incoming transactions or permanently copy sensitive data in real-time.

The company cautioned that such attacks are becoming increasingly frequent and more challenging. Most attackers don’t exploit traditional blockchain vulnerabilities.

Instead, they prey on users’ trust in external systems and interfaces. In several instances, the victims lacked knowledge of a hack on their wallet interfaces until money was missing.

To Compromise Wallet Interfaces, Front-End Hacks are Used

Front-end exploits on the infrastructure part exploit what the users see and use. This follows the wallet interface itself or the scripts to confirm transactions.

Suppose an attacker gains access to a project’s web infrastructure, such as content delivery networks or GitHub repositories. They can inject malicious code without altering the blockchain. Such attacks are stealth attacks and can elude regular audits or antivirus scanners.

One of the sources of damage is fake wallet applications, malicious browser extensions, and fake support websites. They promise to help users obtain a fake cryptocurrency wallet. Once put in, such phrases are mined to transfer all funds to the attacker’s wallets.

TRM Labs Urges Multi-Layered Security

TRM Labs suggests the crypto community needs a multi-layered model of security. They suggest adding physical hardware authentication, biometrics, and sharding of crypto seed phrases. This way, no file or paper can access them.

Over 80% of the $2.1 Billion in crypto losses in early 2025 were tied to seed-phrase leaks and front-end hacks, according to TRM Labs. These weaknesses were the main entry points for cybercriminals.

There is a firm change in the way of acting, and the industry must change fast. The company also demanded increased cooperation between blockchain projects, the police, and cybersecurity researchers.

The lack of global coordination allows criminals to move their funds across the chains. They can also mix the transactions or operate in jurisdictions with little crypto regulation.

Technicians Advise on Increasing Sophistication

The speed and accuracy of such attacks are increasingly causing alarm in the security circles. As an anonymous wallet developer said, it is no longer random phishing emails.

They are highly targeted, and many resemble the actual design of reliable wallets. Experienced users are even being netted down.

Many users digitally store their crypto seed phrases through screenshots, cloud services, or messaging apps. This happens despite repeated warnings against the practice.

TRM Labs recommends keeping seed phrases offline. It also advises using hardware wallets for secure long-term crypto storage.

A Critical Moment for Crypto Security

It is a cause of concern that 2023 and 2024 are out of the window in the first six months of 2025. Also, the theft only shows the way it is going. Such vulnerabilities threaten cryptocurrency’s mainstream use and trust as it becomes used more within the global financial system.

TRM Labs ended the report with a definite statement: current practices of crypto asset security are insufficient. It should now be about protecting the entire chain, including the user interface and the infrastructure.

As crypto seed phrase hacks and front-end attacks cost billions of dollars, two choices face the industry: things must change. Its reaction to these historic breaches, whether more robust security or remaining vulnerable, may constitute the new era of digital finance.
